Guide

Can you install a central vacuum in an existing home?

Yes, in most homes. The question is how the pipe gets from the power unit to each inlet.

The short answer

Most retrofits use the basement ceiling for main-floor inlets and closets or the attic for upper floors. Bungalows with an unfinished basement are usually simplest. Homes with a fully finished basement and no attic access take more planning.

What to expect

An in-home visit to look at routes, a written quote, then usually one day of work. Each inlet needs one opening about the size of a light switch box. Any other access openings are discussed first.
