Central vacuum has weak suction: what causes it?

Five causes cover most weak-suction calls. Here is how to tell them apart.

1. Full bag or canister

The most common cause. Empty or replace it first.

2. Dirty filter

A clogged filter chokes airflow. Clean or replace it as your manual describes.

3. A clog

If suction is weak at one inlet, the clog is likely in that branch. If it is weak everywhere, check the hose and the line near the unit.

4. An air leak

An inlet door that does not close, a worn seal, or a loose fitting at the unit.

5. A worn motor

Older motors lose power and get louder. If the checks above do not help, book a diagnosis.
